This is Little Mavis, having a #wander around the South Cliff Gardens in Scarborough. Firstly, an avenue of trees that look like they’re going to grab you.
And this is a Star Disk on the sea front. The notice tells us that there are 42 ‘stars’ on it, which glow at night through fibre-optic cables.
Stairs to nowhere over on the right, which appealed to Mr. Wombat for some strange reason. And next, the Italian Garden, which is full of birds, and squirrels which sprint from side to side.
At one end of the Italian Garden is this proper shelter from the wind and rain. I love the mighty columns:
… from which can be seen a Japanesey looking tree - - and a sort of pergola, or maybe a giant room-divider. Without the room. And with a sea view.
The Italian Garden boasts an obligatory naked statue, of Mercury I believe.
We are below the “cliff-top” road here, and looking at how it is held up makes me think I won’t ne walking along that pavement again. Approaching the sea-front café now… … although we are tempted to rest in another over-the-top shelter… … or investigate the luxurious ‘Sunbathing Deck’ – if you look closely you will see the “Sun Bathing” sign, although appropriately the word sun is now rather faded.
The café is open (yay!) and they serve a lovely steaming mug of Bovril, perfect for this grey day.
Sitting outside, we can finally see right across to the town:
We’ll head that way, I think. Colourful beach huts -
A shot of all the various levels creeping up from the shore:
Maybe we should have brought our fishing nets…
Once you could wash your feet here, although now it seems only dogs are interested in the old pump, including Ben there. The cliff tramway will hoist you up to the top -
although watching the cars ascend and descend I’m not convinced that it is the safest way to get up there. Through the arches instead… … to The Spa (performances nightly in the summer).
We could always visit the Vitadome (whatever the hell that is),
As we reach the town, we are greeted by the circular museum, and we stop taking photos ‘cause we are tired.
Love the pics. Want to go and have a look now. I especially love colourful beach huts for some reason. And they have Kryptonite on the shore!
